GUIDANCE - ALCOHOL PREVENTION RESOURCES

During adolescence, young people begin to take risks and test limits. They do so because they are moving from a family-centered world to the larger community, within which they will begin to define their own identity. It is during this time that alcohol and other drug abuse is becoming a growing problem. According to a recent study by the Office of Substance Abuse & Prevention, as many as 65 to 75 percent of substance abusers are between the ages of 12 and 29. Furthermore, 33 percent of teenagers experience problems at home, school, work or in the community stemming from substance abuse. The fact that teenagers become addicted more quickly than adults contributes to these problems. (*Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, 1989).

It is also during this time that parents have an especially important role in preventing and addressing underage drinking. The following articles will provide you with information about the hazards of drinking alcohol and with helpful tips on how to successfully address the issue of underage drinking . These are guidelines for parents to use for discussion as well as assessing potential problems. If you need further assistance or would like more information, always feel free to contact Mrs. Rupp at Ext. 104 or Ms. Sullivan at ext. 108.
