Whew!!! What a month we just had here at St. Francis. Our Fall Parents Social – Comedy Sportz was a big hit. Thanks to all who attended and special thanks to Allison Simmons, Donna Simoncelli and their committee for all their hard work in organizing a great night out. The SAA held their annual Golf Outing which was a huge success and enjoyed by all who attended.
Also, if you did not purchase your school directory, your child can purchase them at the bookstore or you may purchase them at the concession stand during volleyball games. They are $3.00 a piece or 2 for $5.00.
This past week our students have been celebrating Homecoming with the theme
“MY GENERATION” with different themed days throughout the week. Friday the students celebrated their Spartan Pride with the annual Powder Puff game in the afternoon and the big Pep Rally at 7:30 in the Spyglass to get them in the spirit for the big homecoming game today (Saturday). The week’s festivities will end with the homecoming dance in the evening. Also, our congratulations to this year’s homecoming court: Jaci Berger, Julia Bongiorno, Michelle Kocher, Katie Lillis, Kelly Rupkey, David Cox, Brian Hartzell, Peter Kao, TJ Misfud, and Joey Murnane.
I encourage all parents to show your SPARTAN PRIDE by coming to the game today. (Spartan Wear will be available for purchase). If you cannot attend the homecoming game, please try to show your support to our other athletic teams throughout the year (schedules are posted on viewmyschedule.com).
As this month’s activities end, others are in the process of being prepared! The SAA 5K run will be held on Sunday, October 28th – information will be coming shortly. The annual PO Fashion Show will be held on Sunday, November 18 th at Drury Lane. A BIG thank you to Carrie Howe and Anne Roberts for coming forward to chair this event. There is also great news with respect to our Casino Night/Auction on March 15 th, we have a wonderful couple who stepped up to chair this event – Jeane and Pat Rosmonowski! They have great leadership skills and are ready to lead us into a new era of “Takin’ Chances for St. Francis”. Many thanks to Jeane and Pat for their willingness to give to our community in this way. We look forward to working together.
As you can see, St. Francis is full of things to do. So I encourage all of you to get involved and participate in the many events we have to offer to make your experience here at St. Francis the best it can be.

Our next Market Day sale is Tuesday, September 25 from 5 - 6 pm in the North Hallway. Our sponsor this month is Girls Volleyball and they are once again working to improve their sales by 10% over last year. If we sell $8,500 in products and have 116 customers, we will earn $400 in books for the school library from Scholastic Books. So please give the SFHS community your continued support by placing a Market Day order. Online orders are due by Friday, September 21 at noon. If you've missed the cutoff and still want to order, please give me a call as I have access online until later in the day.
Thanks for your support.
Go Spartans!

Medications at school
All medications given in school are required to be approved by a licensed prescriber. Written documentation is required by the parent and physician by completing the Authorization for the Administration of Medication form which can be downloaded from the website. Medications will not be given unless this form is on file in the office. Medications must be in their original containers and not in plastic baggies.
This applies to emergency medications such as inhalers and EpiPens. If you have any questions please see the policy on the website or call the office.
Health and Immunizations
All students must submit proof of having a health examination upon entering the ninth grade and proof of having received all vaccinations required by the State of Illinois. Compliance with these requirements is most important for the health of all our St. Francis students and staff. It’s also the law!!
West Nile Virus
It’s mosquito season. They are particularly bad in our area right now. Mosquitoes transmit serious and sometimes fatal diseases, such as the West Nile Virus. The onset of symptoms is 3-14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Most people infected with the WNV experience few if any symptoms and recover completely after a few days. Although rare, some may experience West Nile encephalitis or meningitis-these symptoms include headache, high fever, stiff neck, mental status changes, coma, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis.
Persons over the age of about 55 or with pre-existing health conditions are more likely to develop severe illness. The neurologic effects may be permanent.
Protect yourself from bites by:
- Using mosquito repellants with about 30% DEET (about 10% DEET for ages 2-12). Apply to clothes whenever possible and sparingly to skin if the label permits. Shower as soon as you come in.
- When possible avoid places and times when mosquitoes bite
- Wear light colored clothing that covers your arms and legs.
- Make sure window screens fit tightly.
- Using a mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors
Illegally Sold Colored Contact Lenses
We received an alert from the Division of Professional Regulation regarding the illegal sale of colored contact lenses that are sold primarily to teenagers. These imported lenses (which may or may not be FDA approved) are sold under the counter at beauty supply stores, flea markets, athletic stores or costume stores. Since an eye care professional is not available, there is no fitting, no handling instructions or any explanation of the disinfection process. With recurrent use, improper storage and over wear, infection may likely ensue and subsequent permanent corneal scarring and vision loss may follow. Symptoms include inflammation, irritation, pain, and discharge. Adults should note students who present with a different eye color.
